The network is also home to the current incarnation of Let's Make a Deal , hosted by singer and comedian Wayne Brady. CBS is the only commercial broadcast network that continues to broadcast daytime game shows. Past game shows that have had both daytime and prime time runs on the network include Beat the Clock , To Tell the Truth , and Password. Two long-running primetime-only games were the panel shows What's My Line? CBS Daytime airs two daytime soap operas each weekday: the hour-long series The Young and the Restless , which debuted in , and the half-hour series The Bold and the Beautiful , which debuted in CBS broadcast the live-action series Captain Kangaroo on weekday mornings from to , and on Saturdays until From to , CBS News produced a series of one-minute segments titled In the News , which aired between other Saturday morning programs.

In September , CBS began contracting the time period out to other companies to provide programming and material for its Saturday morning schedule. After its agreement with Nelvana ended, the network then entered into a deal with Nickelodeon to air programming from its Nick Jr. From to , live-action and animated Nickelodeon series aimed at older children also aired as part of the block under the name Nick on CBS.

In March , CBS entered into a three-year agreement with DIC Entertainment , which was acquired later that year by the Cookie Jar Group , to program the Saturday morning time slot as part of a deal that included distribution of select tape-delayed Formula One auto races. On February 24, , it was announced that CBS would renew its contract with Cookie Jar for another three seasons through On July 24, , CBS entered into an agreement with Litton Entertainment , which already programmed a syndicated Saturday morning block exclusive to ABC stations and would later produce a block for CBS sister network The CW that would debut the following year, to launch a new Saturday morning block featuring live-action reality-based lifestyle, wildlife, and sports series.

CBS was the original broadcast network home of the animated primetime holiday specials based on the Peanuts comic strip, beginning with A Charlie Brown Christmas in Over 30 holiday Peanuts specials each for a specific holiday such as Halloween were broadcast on CBS until , when the broadcast rights were acquired by ABC. CBS also aired several primetime animated specials based on the works of Dr. Seuss Theodor Geisel , beginning with How the Grinch Stole Christmas in , as well as several specials based on the Garfield comic strip during the s which led to Garfield getting his own Saturday morning cartoon on the network, Garfield and Friends , which ran from to All of these animated specials, from to , began with a fondly remembered seven-second animated opening sequence, in which the words "A CBS Special Presentation" were displayed in colorful lettering the ITC Avant Garde typeface, widely used in the s, was used for the title logo.

The word "SPECIAL", in all caps and repeated multiple times in multiple colors, slowly zoomed out from the frame in a spinning counterclockwise motion against a black background, and rapidly zoomed back into frame as a single word, in white, at the end; the sequence was accompanied by a jazzy though majestic up-tempo fanfare with dramatic horns and percussion which was edited incidental music from the CBS crime drama Hawaii Five-O , titled "Call to Danger" on the Capitol Records soundtrack LP.

This opening sequence appeared immediately before all CBS specials of the period such as the Miss USA pageants and the annual presentation of the Kennedy Center Honors , in addition to animated specials this opening was presumably designed by or under the supervision of longtime CBS creative director Lou Dorfsman , who oversaw print and on-air graphics for CBS for nearly 30 years, replacing William Golden , who died in Telecast every few months between and , first in black-and-white and then in color beginning in , these programs introduced millions of children to classical music through the eloquent commentaries of Bernstein.

The specials were nominated for several Emmy Awards , including two wins in and later in , [] and were among the first programs ever broadcast from the Lincoln Center for the Performing Arts. In April , CBS presented a slightly abbreviated version of Horowitz in Moscow , a live piano recital by pianist Vladimir Horowitz , which marked his return to Russia after over 60 years.

Eastern Time in the U. It was so successful that CBS repeated it a mere two months later by popular demand, this time on videotape, rather than live. In later years, the program was shown as a standalone special on PBS ; the current DVD of the telecast omits the commentary by Charles Kuralt , but includes additional selections not heard on the CBS telecast. The program was a concert commemorating the re-opening of Carnegie Hall after its complete renovation. It featured, along with luminaries such as Leonard Bernstein, popular music artists such as Frank Sinatra.

Based upon the classic Charles Perrault fairy tale , it is the only Rodgers and Hammerstein musical to have been written for television. It was subsequently remade by CBS in , with Lesley Ann Warren, Stuart Damon, Ginger Rogers , and Walter Pidgeon among its stars; the remake also included the new song "Loneliness of Evening", which was originally composed in for South Pacific but was not performed in that musical.

CBS was also the original broadcast home for the primetime specials produced by the National Geographic Society. The Geographic series in the U. The specials have featured stories on many scientific figures such as Louis Leakey , Jacques Cousteau and Jane Goodall , that not only featured their work but helped make them internationally known and accessible to millions. A majority of the specials were narrated by various actors, notably Alexander Scourby during the CBS run.

The success of the specials led in part to the creation of the National Geographic Channel , a cable channel launched in January as a joint venture between the National Geographic Society and Fox Cable Networks. The specials' distinctive theme music, by Elmer Bernstein , was also adopted by the National Geographic Channel. The Miss USA beauty pageant aired on CBS from to ; during a large portion of that period, the telecast was often emceed by the host of one of the network's game shows.

John Charles Daly hosted the show from to , succeeded by Bob Barker from to at which point Barker, an animal rights activist who eventually convinced producers of The Price Is Right to cease offering fur coats as prizes on the program, quit in a dispute over their use , Alan Thicke in , Dick Clark from to , and Bob Goen from to The pageant's highest viewership was recorded in the early s, when it regularly topped the Nielsen ratings on the week of its broadcast. On June 1, , it was announced that Elvis Presley had signed a deal with CBS to appear in a new television special.

CBS has 15 owned-and-operated stations, and current and pending affiliation agreements with additional television stations encompassing 51 states, the District of Columbia, two U. Vincent and the Grenadines. CBS provides video on demand access for delayed viewing of the network's programming through various means, including via its website at CBS. Upon the release of the app in March , CBS restricted streaming of the most recent episode of any of the network's program on its streaming app for Apple iOS devices until eight days after their initial broadcast in order to encourage live or same-week via both DVR and cable on demand viewing; programming selections on the app were limited until the release of its Google Play and Windows 8 apps in October , expanded the selections to include full episodes of all CBS series to which the network does not license the streaming rights to other services.

CBS All Access offers the most recent episodes of the network's shows the day after their original broadcast, as well as complete back catalogs of most of its current series and a wide selection of episodes of classic series from the CBS Television Distribution and ViacomCBS Domestic Media Networks program library, to subscribers of the service. Due to local programming rights, not all content is shared with its US counterpart, whilst the Australian version also features numerous full seasons of local Network 10 shows, all commercial-free.

The name will also be extended to international markets and services such as 10 All Access. CBS's master feed is transmitted in i high definition , the native resolution format for CBS Corporation's television properties. However, seven of its affiliates transmit the network's programming in p HD, while seven others carry the network feed in i standard definition [] either due to technical considerations for affiliates of other major networks that carry CBS programming on a digital subchannel or because a primary feed CBS affiliate has not yet upgraded their transmission equipment to allow content to be presented in HD.

The network gradually converted much of its existing programming from standard definition to high definition beginning with the —01 season , with select shows among that season's slate of freshmen scripted series being broadcast in HD starting with their debuts. On September 1, , when ABC converted to a widescreen presentation, CBS and The CW were the only remaining networks that framed their promotions and on-screen graphical elements for a presentation, though with CBS Sports' de facto conversion with Super Bowl 50 and their new graphical presentation designed for framing, in practice, most CBS affiliates ask pay-TV providers to pass down a widescreen presentation by default over their standard definition channels.

This continued for CBS until September 24, , when the network converted its on-screen graphical elements to a widescreen presentation for all non-news and sports programs. Litton Entertainment continues to frame the graphical elements in their programs for Dream Team within a frame due to them being positioned for future syndicated sales, though all of its programming has been in high definition.

The CBS television network's initial logo, used from the s to , consisted of an oval spotlight which shone on the block letters "CBS". The following season, as Golden prepared a new "ident", CBS President Frank Stanton insisted on keeping the Eye device and using it as much as possible Golden died unexpectedly in , and was replaced by Lou Dorfsman , one of his top assistants, who would go on to oversee all print and on-air graphics for CBS for the next 30 years.

The CBS eye has since become an American icon. While the symbol's settings have changed, the Eye device itself has not been redesigned in its entire history. The logo is alternately known as the "Eyemark", which was also the name of CBS's domestic and international syndication divisions in the mid-to-late s before the King World acquisition and Viacom merger.

In October , the network celebrated the 60th anniversary of the introduction of the Eye logo, featuring special IDs of logo versions from previous CBS image campaigns being shown during the network's primetime lineup. CBS had historically used a specially-commissioned variant of Didot , a close relative to Bodoni , as its corporate font. CBS has developed several notable image campaigns, and several of the network's most well-known slogans were introduced in the s. The "Reach for the Stars" campaign used during the —82 season features a space theme to capitalize on both CBS's stellar improvement in the ratings and the historic launch of the space shuttle Columbia.

Vocals for the campaign's jingle were contributed by Richie Havens —84; one occasion in —85 and Kenny Rogers — The —87 season ushered in the "Share the Spirit of CBS" campaign, the network's first to completely use computer graphics and digital video effects. Unlike most network campaign promos, the full-length version of "Share the Spirit" not only showed a brief clip preview of each new fall series, but also utilized CGI effects to map out the entire fall schedule by night.

Like its predecessor, most "CBSpirit" promos utilized a procession of clips from the network's programs. However, the new graphic motif was a swirling or "swishing" blue line that was used to represent "the spirit". The full-length promo, like the previous year, had a special portion that identified new fall shows, but the mapped-out fall schedule shot was abandoned. The goal was to convey a more sensual, new-age image through distinguished, advanced-looking computer graphics and soothing music, backgrounding images and clips of emotionally powerful scenes and characters.

However, it was this season in which CBS saw its ratings freefall, the deepest in the network's history. The initial version was an ambitious campaign that attempted to elevate CBS out of last place among the major networks ; the motif centered around network stars interacting with each other in a remote studio set, getting ready for photo and television shoots, as well as for the new season on CBS.

The high-energy promo song and the campaign's practices saw many customized variations by all of CBS's owned-and-operated stations and affiliates, which participated in the campaign per a network mandate. For the —91 season , the campaign featured a new jingle performed by the Temptations , which featured an altered version of their hit " Get Ready ". During the season for the end-of-show network identification sequence, a three-note sound mark was introduced, which was eventually adapted into the network's IDs and production company vanity cards following the closing credits of most of its programs during the "Welcome Home" era.

Throughout the s, CBS's ratings resurgence was backed by the network's "It's All Here" campaign which introduced updated versions of the sound mark used during certain promotions and production company vanity cards during the closing credits of programs ; in campaign introduced the slogan "Everybody's Watching", the network's strategy led to the proclamation that it was "America's Most Watched Network".

In , the network introduced a campaign entitled "Only CBS", in which network promotions proclaim several unique qualities it has the slogan was also used in program promotions following the announcement of the timeslot of a particular program. In October , CBS announced that it will begin to employ a more unified branding between the network and its divisions to strengthen brand awareness across platforms. The network also plans to discontinue its use of proclamations regarding its stature in promos, with chief marketing officer Michael Benson explaining that they aimed to "be something where people feel like they are part of the family.

Prior to the acquisition, CBS had long been a major supplier of international programs to the network. The cost of maintaining program supply agreements with CBS and 21st Century Fox was a major factor in the network's unprofitability during the mids. In the U. Entertainment and non-breaking news programming is shown day and date on a one-day broadcast delay , as Guam is located on the west side of the International Date Line for example, NCIS , which airs on Tuesday nights, is carried Wednesdays on KUAM-LP, and is advertised by the station as airing on the latter night in on-air promotions , with live programming and breaking news coverage airing as scheduled, meaning live sports coverage often airs early in the morning.

In Hong Kong , the CBS Evening News was broadcast live during the early morning hours on ATV; networks in that country maintains agreement to rebroadcast portions of the program 12 hours after the initial broadcast to provide additional content in the event that their affiliates have insufficient news content to fill time during their local news programs.

These channels were shut down in late November Although many Indians recognized their great works through OTT platforms in the later years. The controversy raised questions about the legal roles in decision-making and whether journalistic standards should be compromised despite legal pressures and threats. The decision nevertheless sent shockwaves throughout the television industry, the journalism community, and the country.

Bush 's service in the Air National Guard in and The "Best in Show" award was instead given to the Razer Edge tablet. On September 9, , The New Yorker reported that six additional women in addition to the six original women reported in July had raised accusations against Moonves, going back to the s.

People encouraged to share experience online Shelton said Black entrepreneurs face systemic barriers that prevent their business from moving forward. She hopes the challenge will lead to long-term allies in the community.

And that in doing so, you're a part of the solution and not just make it something to do during Black History Month, but make it a practice, a conscious practice every single month of the year, year after year, to make this world a more equitable place for all," she said. So far, we've received almost 67, emails from all corners of the country. Canada's chief public health officer, Dr. Theresa Tam, warned Wednesday that variant strains of the coronavirus had been found in eight provinces, and that they could quickly reverse the gains the country has made in recent weeks in the battle against COVID At least two of three variants of concern are spreading in Canada, in some cases with no known link to travel, and have already led to devastating outbreaks in long-term care homes.

Here's a look at some of the most common questions Canadians have about the variants. What is it about the new coronavirus variants that makes them more transmissible? As a virus infects people, it can mutate as it makes copies of itself. Some mutations can be harmful to a virus, causing it to die out. Others can offer an advantage and help it spread. B, first discovered in South Africa, which shares some of the same mutations as B P1, which was first discovered in Japan, in four travellers who had been in Brazil.

Eric Topol, a U. He said those changes are likely behind its higher transmission, with the altered spike protein potentially allowing the coronavirus to infect cells more easily. The other two variants of concern also have changes to the spike protein. Bonnie Henry 'confident' variant transmission isn't widespread: If the variants are more contagious, do we need to distance more?

Ashleigh Tuite, an infectious diseases epidemiologist and assistant professor at the University of Toronto's Dalla Lana School of Public Health, noted to CBC's Adam Miller earlier this month that the minute exposure time and two-metre distance guidelines from the federal government are "arbitrary. But I think the science has evolved, or at least our thinking has evolved. In fact, the CDC released new guidance on Wednesday that said a lab experiment had found two masks meant double the protection.

The CDC said a cloth mask worn over a surgical mask can tighten the gaps around the mask's edges that can let virus particles in. The researchers found that wearing one mask — surgical or cloth — blocked around 40 per cent of the particles coming in during an experiment.

When a cloth mask was worn on top of a surgical mask, about 80 per cent were blocked. WATCH COVID variants can cause cases to increase exponentially, Ontario health official says: Canada recommends the use of three-layer non-medical masks with a filter layer to prevent the spread of the virus, but has not updated its recommendations since November, before the emergence of the new variants.

Zain Chagla, an infectious diseases physician at St. Joseph's Healthcare Hamilton, told CBC News that while three-layer non-medical masks are a good "minimum standard," Canadians should opt for masks that offer better protection whenever possible. He recommends looking at yourself in the mirror before you go out to make sure your mask isn't too loose fitting.

And if it's not, work out a way to do that," he said. It's possible. There is some evidence the variant first found in the U. It's felt that once you get the immunity from the virus it may last for some time, but not everyone's will last the same as the next person.

James Hamblin, a Yale University public health policy lecturer and a writer with the Atlantic, told CBC's Front Burner that a raging outbreak in the Brazilian city of Manaus also pointed toward re-infection. The city was hit so hard by the coronavirus in the spring that researchers estimated that 76 per cent of the population had been infected, which makes the severity of this recent outbreak unexpected and concerning.

Hamblin said the leading theory is that it's a combination of fading immunity given that the first surge in Manaus was about nine months ago, along with the dangers of the P1 variant. The variant "shares a mutation that the South Africa variant also has, which gives it a propensity to evade immune responses.

He said the concern is if you only give one dose of a two-dose vaccine regimen you can create an environment that allows the virus to "selectively evade that protection, and that's certainly a theoretical concern. Is there concern that 14 days is not long enough to quarantine and protect others from virus variants? Bogoch said that while the variants of concern may have greater transmissibility or the ability to evade vaccination more readily, the incubation time or duration of the illness hasn't changed.

Deena Hinshaw, Alberta's chief medical officer of health, during a news conference last week. Last night, we asked our experts about the impact of stress — nearly one year into the pandemic. A TD Bank teller who spoke out about the pressure to sell customers products and services they didn't need says she feels vindicated a class-action lawsuit is now underway, shining a light on those allegedly unethical practices. She says she and her colleagues were pressured to make unnecessary sales in order to earn revenue for the bank — and to hold onto their jobs.

The class action was certified by a Quebec judge in April , but TD only submitted its statement of defence earlier this week. The statement strongly denies the allegations of a widespread, unethical sales culture and says the lawsuit should be dismissed. The teller was one of three TD employees who contacted Go Public in , alleging relentless pressure to meet sales targets by doing things like signing up customers for credit cards, adding overdraft protection to customers' accounts or moving them into more expensive chequing accounts.

CBC News is not naming her because she could lose her job. After the teller and her colleagues spoke out, hundreds of other current and former TD employees contacted Go Public with similar stories. They said they too felt pressured to behave unethically in order to meet sales targets and hold onto their jobs. In some cases, they even admitted to breaking the law to do it. Following Go Public's reporting in March , shares in Toronto-Dominion Bank posted their biggest loss since — plunging more than 5.

The lawsuit has been filed under the Quebec Securities Act and claims investors purchased TD stock based on "false and misleading statements" from TD Bank. Shareholders say they were not aware of the alleged internal pressure to sell products and services at any cost. According to court documents, he purchased TD securities for an investment fund.

The documents say he was unaware of what is described in the originating application as TD's "pressure selling program" and therefore acquired the securities at artificially inflated prices. The court documents also show that TD spoke about delivering "a legendary customer experience" while being recognized as "an extraordinary place to work," guided by ethics policies "that meet the highest standards of integrity, professionalism, and ethical behaviour. And ultimately it created a work environment which put an extreme amount of pressure on its employees.

TD further notes that its been repeatedly recognized for its workplace culture, noting that, in , for the eighth consecutive year, it was "recognized as one of Canada's best employers," according to Aon Hewitt, a human resources consulting firm. Of particular note is one released Dec. Faguy says that document should have disclosed that the increase in retail revenue was driven by what he argues was "an unethical, illegal and predatory" employee sales target system.

It does not, however, cover stock traded on a U. Systemic problem? Kalajdzic says the challenge in this class action will be to prove the alleged wrongdoing was widespread. TD "can't be faulted for whatever individual employees did," she said. All five banks said in statements to Go Public that they act in the best interest of their clients and that employees are expected to follow codes of conduct.

It found that a sharp focus on sales may be increasing the risk of "mis-selling" to consumers — defined as selling products or services that may be unsuitable, that don't take consumers' needs into "reasonable" account or that involve incomplete or misleading information.

However, the FCAC's review did not find mis-selling to be widespread, which TD points out in its class-action defence. As for the first TD teller who spoke out, she says she's grateful TD's sales culture, and the alleged harm she says it caused, will be under scrutiny. Proof Strategies conducts a survey every year to assess how much faith Canadians have in major institutions and authorities.

Bruce MacLellan, Proof's CEO, says trust in vaccines is not quite strong enough, based on health experts who suggest at least three-quarters of Canadians need to be vaccinated for good herd immunity against COVID to take effect. The survey was conducted online with about 1, respondents between Jan. The polling industry's professional body, the Marketing Research and Intelligence Association, says online surveys cannot be assigned a margin of error as they are not random and therefore are not necessarily representative of the whole population.

Three others are under review; the federal government has bought two more, but neither of those is expected to be considered for approval until the fall. More than , Canadians are now fully vaccinated with the two doses the current vaccines require, and almost , people have received single doses so far.

When the survey was taken, Canada was ramping up vaccinations, with more than 40, doses given out most days during that period. In the days since deliveries slowed to a crawl, and faith in the rollout plummeted. At that time however, 64 per cent of people surveyed said they trusted the vaccines, a number that was relatively constant across the country. Younger people and low-income Canadians expressed less trust in the vaccines.

Eighty-six per cent of those over the age of 75 said they trusted the vaccines, compared with less than 60 per cent for millennials between 25 and 44 years old and Generation Z between 18 and 24 years old. The survey also reported that almost two-thirds of respondents trusted the federal and provincial public health doctors they see delivering updates on COVID multiple times a week. Theresa Tam said Feb. She said another 20 per cent or so don't currently want to be inoculated but could be persuaded.

Tam said some of the questions people have are relatively easy to answer, including some fear about how quickly the vaccines were developed, or questions about the data on how effective they are. She noted there have been no serious adverse events after the vaccinations in Canada so far, and the more people who do get the shots safely, the more others may be convinced to follow suit.

The vaccine has so far been safe, with no safety signals, so I think that's actually a really good way of boosting vaccine confidence, is seeing other people get vaccinated. The Proof survey also found a year into the pandemic, Canadians' trust in doctors and scientists appears to have grown.

In January , the survey found about 76 per cent of respondents said they trusted doctors and 70 per cent had trust in scientists. In January that had grown to 81 per cent for doctors and 77 per cent for scientists. MacLellan said it is noteworthy that a year ago, friends and family were the most trusted sources of information for those surveyed, but this year scientists and doctors have both exceeded them.

Politicians did not fare as well. A year ago 40 per cent of those surveyed said they trusted government, compared to 32 per cent this year. Prime Minister Justin Trudeau has seen a steady decline in trust over the five years he has been in office, with 46 per cent indicating trust in him in , compared with 32 per cent this year. This report by The Canadian Press was first published Feb.

Kaitlyn Anello was flooded with emotions this week when a Facebook notification brought up photos of her from a year ago trying on wedding dresses. The year-old from Toronto had been planning a May wedding in Niagara Falls before her engagement ended on New Year's Eve, launching her back into singlehood for the first time in four years. While some couples across the country are planning modified Valentine's Day celebrations on Sunday amid COVID restrictions, Anello is just trying to forget the romantic holiday altogether.

While they typically celebrated Valentine's Day in low-key fashion — cooking dinner together and exchanging greeting cards — she's cognizant of the social expectations surrounding the upcoming date. And she's been feeling it more than ever. Anne Wilson, a psychology professor at Laurier University says Valentine's Day can be tough for singles because of the connotations attached to the date.

It "valorizes" being linked to another person in a romantic relationship, she says, while "emphasizing societal stigma against singlehood. Even those in committed, long-term relationships can find Valentine's Day stressful, Wilson says. Expectations for the "culturally hyped" holiday can fall flat, and disappointment is often inflamed by social media, she adds, even if we recognize that online posts don't always represent reality.

For singles, the pandemic has added a complicating level to dating, as people are urged to limit contacts to slow the spread of the virus. Closures of movie theatres, bars and indoor-dining establishments in parts of the country have also added logistical obstacles to the dating scene. Lisa Schueler, a single mother in Cambridge, Ont. And this year it can exacerbate the loneliness many are already feeling because of the pandemic. Even groups of single friends who typically celebrate Valentine's Day together can't do that in person now, and that can compound concerns, he added.

In some ways those restrictions might actually help alleviate social pressure on singles to go out and celebrate in romantic ways, Wilson added. Schueler, who would normally celebrate Valentine's Day by going out to dinner with her ex, is planning on cooking a nice meal for her year-old son instead. She says having the teenager around has helped both of them lessen the isolation brought on by the pandemic, even if her son doesn't always see it that way.

Indian technology minister Ravi Shankar Prasad warned U. At first dismissed and ridiculed by Western countries, Russia's Sputnik V vaccine has not only been rehabilitated; it's emerging as a powerful tool of influence abroad for President Vladimir Putin. Instead, initial claims of Sputnik V's effectiveness were met with deep skepticism after Russia authorized its widespread use before completing all phases of its clinical trials. However, a key turning point came last week with the validation of Sputnik V's Phase 3 trials by the Lancet medical journal.

It confirmed the vaccine is "safe and effective. Global market Since the Lancet article, more good news announcements about the vaccine have followed, with Russian TV showing pallets of boxes filled with vaccine vials being fork-lifted into the bellies of Aeroflot aircraft, ready for delivery to countries across South America, the Middle East and Central Asia.

Russia's government reports that up to 30 countries have either already purchased the vaccine or have expressed an interest in doing so. Even the once-unlikely notion of selling the vaccine to countries in Europe suddenly seems to be within reach. On Tuesday, the regulatory body for the 27 members of the European Union announced Russia had made a formal submission for approval of Sputnik V and that the review process could begin shortly.

Hungary, which ran its own trials of Sputnik V, is so far the only EU country to announce plans to use it. Other member states, however, say they continue to have reservations about the political motivations behind Russia's vaccine hype. Lithuanian Prime Minister Ingrida Simonyte tweeted that she saw no good news in Russia's vaccine breakthrough. Diplomatic dilemma Twigg says for Russia's adversaries, the choice of whether to use Sputnik or not presents an ethical dilemma.

In fact, you needed [them] yesterday. With the Kremlin facing widespread criticism for its imprisonment of Putin-foe Alexey Navalny and the subsequent mass arrests of thousands of protestors who came out in support of the opposition leader, Borrell's words of criticism for Putin were overshadowed by his comments praising Sputnik and his hope it would be made widely available to the world.

Borrell's visit was widely slammed as a diplomatic blunder that allowed Putin to shift the focus away from Russia's authoritarian crackdown on dissent and dodge the issue of Navlany's fate. The question of whether or not to use Sputnik V is especially acute for Russia's closest neighbour, Ukraine, which is one of the poorest nations in Europe and has yet to launch a mass vaccination campaign.

Nonetheless, Ukraine, which has had close to 1. The only regions of Ukraine that will use the Russian vaccine are those controlled by pro-Russia separatist forces around the eastern city of Donetsk, where a shipment of , doses of Sputnik V arrived recently. Russia-friendly media outlets have launched a barrage of coverage, including dozens of newspaper and TV reports, targeting Ukrainian audiences, much of it aimed at denigrating Western-made coronavirus vaccines and attempting to leverage Ukraine's lack of vaccines as a means of turning the population against Zelensky's pro-Western government.

In response, Ukraine's president revoked the licences of three pro-Russia TV channels in the country, claiming the move was necessary in "the name of national security. Few options for some countries Elsewhere, however, geopolitics are either less of a factor or simply outweighed by the lack of vaccine alternatives. Russia shipped 10, doses of Sputnik V to the Palestinian Territories this week, allowing a mass-vaccination campaign to begin for the 4.

Doctors and staff at Istishari Arab Hospital in Ramallah were among the first to get jabbed. We have to protect our population against this pandemic and this virus," said Dr. Ali Abed Rabbo, director of preventative health for the Palestinian Authority.

Hesitancy at home One of the ironies of Sputnik V's new-found international success is that people outside of Russia may be more convinced of its efficacy than those at home. The Levada Centre, an independent polling and research organization, reported earlier this month that only 38 per cent of Russians are ready to get vaccinated, with many saying they either fear side-effects or don't trust the Russian vaccine maker or just won't take any vaccine.

In an effort to overcome the vaccine hesitancy, pop-up vaccination clinics have been established at many sites around the capital, Moscow, and getting a jab is easy, free and usually involves just a short wait. She told CBC her friends who live in Vancouver are jealous, and they can't believe it's so easy to get vaccinated in Russia. The Green Party leader plans to announce her candidacy for the nomination there Thursday ahead of a possible federal election, setting her up for a rematch in the riding she failed to win in a byelection less than four months ago. Paul came in second to Liberal newcomer Marci Ien in October after former finance minister Bill Morneau resigned the seat, but she garnered a healthy one-third of the votes cast.

The decision ends speculation about whether Paul would run in other Green-friendly electoral districts in Ontario such as Guelph or Toronto—Danforth but reopens questions about the challenges she faces in one of the strongest Grit bastions in the country. The move is the latest by the Greens, who currently have three MPs in Parliament, in anticipation of a potential election campaign as parties vet candidates and rev up fundraising.

Paul, who beat out seven leadership contenders in early October, is trying to carve a middle path among members who come in all shades of green, from eco-socialists to fiscally conservative tree huggers. On the broader political spectrum, Paul has steered the party toward more socially progressive ground that encroaches directly on NDP turf, calling for a guaranteed livable income, universal pharmacare and free post-secondary education.
